Livin' on the dole baby.... why work when uncle sam can make the payments........we just need more 'stimulus' taxes...load on some more, surcharges, health insurance... lay some higher unemployment charges on small business, kick up the percentage businesses have to pay against their payroll...this is a new version of social security on the backs of those that 'can'...wait until those that 'can', can't take it anymore...then we can talk turkey.....

Correction...."neative 12 month rate of change"

wish we could show those NILF numbers back to the late 70's. Could then prove the theory that credit bubbling and perceived "expansion" go hand in hand while jobs were being lost for the last 30+ years.

In Kneale's "attacks" on the Ticker in which he repeated the web address over and over, he made much of the charts & graphs... nice to see the tour-de-force today on that score. People can go all hand-wavy about verbal explanations, but those charts just hit you over the head like a grand piano - I don't care what level of education someone has (too little or too much in the wrong discipline...), they can understand those charts. Bravo!

Gen, do you have any guess on how many illegal aliens have also exited the labor force? That has to be a huge number as well.

As much as I love the presentation of the data Karl, I fear greatly that as diligent you are at presenting the truth in various ways, .corpgov is feverishly working on ways to suppress the data so that people like yourself cannot present reality to a sleeping public. Tainted ways of presenting statistics and propaganda are the pigmen's best tools.

"What comes next?"

Let's think about. There is only x amount of mining that can be done. So that leaves manufacturing and producing. Since there seems to practically enough of everything, the conclusion would seem to be labor has to contract further. Much further. Perhaps even down to levels that could compete with labor in other parts of the world. That would be a significant hit to wages paid.

Should that happen, that is going to be a huge problem for many folks that feel entitled to the American Dream. Note the word "Dream".

Have a fantastic football weekend.

Presumably he can pass the driving test. The study material for the written test, even though they are federal rules, is actually available free at state DOT, only somewhat difficult is Tank/Hazmat, but can easily be studied at home.

Local governments yep - seems like that's the bomb no one can defuse - unless the fedgov pumps money directly into them, what can you do?

...and of course, local governments make money off of property tax, so maybe the next thing after that is tax forclosures.

oh yeah, and presumably municipals should do some 'sploding too, right?

I would like to make the point that for years we exported our manufacturing economy, first to japan, and then elsewhere..... We made up for the loss in wealth creation by selling off some assets and borrowing a little.

But that's okay, because we became a service, value add, and intellectual economy.

But then, we began to export our value add economy, but that's okay, because we substituted finance, insurance, and real estate.... We made up for the loss in wealth creation by selling off more assets, and borrowing a little more.

But then we began to export those service jobs that didn't require face to face interaction between servicer and client..... We made up for the loss in wealth creation by selling the last of our good assets, and borrowing a lot more.

But then we began to export the intellectual economy by outsourcing our software design, engineering design, insurance underwriting, and other industries that didn't require face tame with the client..... We made up for the loss in wealth creation by borrowing even more money, and print up a little bit extra...

And when the finance blew up, and insurance blew up, and real estate blew up..... There was no way to make up for the loss in wealth creation.

The moral of the story?

We killed our golden goose for a feast, instead of being satisfied with just a slow steady stream of eggs.

It was sickening to watch guests on CNBC try to spin this. One lady was on the Steve Liesman show today and she said the trend is still positive even though this number was worse than expected. I think people are just expecting the economy to magically get better, so when the facts show it isn't, they are forced to make excuses and use words like "hopefully" to make them feel better. I don't expect this to change either. It's gonna be like the great depression where people were constantly telling us "recovery is just around the corner" and it wasn't.
